2005 – 2006 Milestones

In 2005 The 1st MVP Cup Asia vs. Europe featured the best of the best in the World. On its 3rd day of the event the Philippine players Kennevic and Kennie Asuncion world rank no. 25 vs Nathan Robertson /Gail Emms rank no. 1 in the world then. The games were so exciting that the screaming fans can be heard outside the Arena due to long rallies of the game. The Philippines lost in a very intense three setter match. However, it is to be noted that it was the first time ever in the history of Philippine badminton tournament to fill up Philsport Arena seats  The local spectators ranged from politicians, to famous basketball athletes, to local celebrities & VIP’s have witness that Filipinos are at par with the worlds best.  Needless to say foreign spectators via live telecast have agreed so too.(July 12 – 14, 2005).

In 2006, the 2nd MVP Cup Asia vs. Europe featured the best of the best in world. It was on its 3rd day at the Araneta Colisium that the Philippines Kennevic and Kennie Asuncion played against Thomas Laybourn / Kamilla Rytter Juhi ranked top 5 in the world for the European team. Philippines lost with 3 set deciding game using the new scoring system “Rally Point”. This event confirmed that Philippine badminton siblings are world class player.(July 14 – 16, 2006)

The first time a Philippine Mixed Doubles pair “ Kennevic “Vic” Asuncion / Kennie Asucion” were invited by China. (Only eight (8) pairs of mixed doubles in the world were invited. And the first time that Philippines grouped with powerhouses managed to beat the Indonesian Mixed doubles players in their group.

On June 21, 2004, KENNEVIC “Vic” ASUNCION was the first Philippine badminton player to be invited by a “Danish Badmintoa Club to play for them in their European league and train its players at the  Horsens Badminton club from August 1, 2004 to April 2005 by Mr. Hans Jakobser – HBK Manager.  But due to a must minimum 6 month contract, the Asuncions as a family decided to decline to this offer.

 

 

 

In 2004, the first Partners Cup (FDG) was held at Asuncion Badminton Center to celebrate the birthday of Mr. Frederick Go with exhibition games from Frederick Go and Kennevic Asuncion vs. Richard Gomez and Rudy Wijaya.  This eventually became a yearly tradition until the present.

1997

In May 1997 – May 2004 Coach Nelson named as National Head Coach
Valle Verde Country Club Head Coach Nelson Asuncion has been appointed by the Philippine Badminton Association (PBA) as the head coach of both the men’s and ladies’ Philippine national badminton teams.

This was RP’s first recorded win over Thailand.

 

 

 

 

 

In 1984, the Philippines made its first appearance in the 4th Thomas Cup qualifying round in Hong Kong (Febuary18 – 26) RP’s best namely Danny So, Nelson Asuncion, Jessie Alonzo, Renato Reyes, Antonio Mance and Salvador Banquiles.
